Materials Needed:
New Ignition Coils
7mm Socket and Ratchet
Flat Blade Screwdriver
These instructions apply for replacing the ignition coils in your 1998-2011 Ford Crown Victoria 4.6L vehicles. These vehicles have 8 cylinders and it is recommended that if one ignition coil needs replacing, you replace all of them. It is highly likely that if one goes bad, the other ignition coils will follow soon after.
- The driver’s side ignition coils will be covered up by the air intake hose when you open up your hood. All you have to do is to loosen up the hose in order to access the ignition coils.
- Loosen up the two hose clamps with your flat blade screwdriver then pull it free.
- Remove the air intake hose
- Next, you must disconnect the ignition coil wiring harness by pulling on its tab. Grab your 7mm socket and ratchet to remove the 7mm bolts from the ignition coils. One the bolt is removed, all that’s left is to pull up and take out the old ignition coil that needs replacing.
- Remove the ignition coil wiring harness
- Remove the bolts from the ignition coils to take them out
- Essentially, you will be repeating all these steps backwards. With your brand new ignition coil, push the coil firmly into place. Insert and secure the ignition coil into place using your 7mm socket and wrench. Be sure to not over or under tighten the bolt.
- Push the new coil into place
- Secure the coil with its bolts
- Reconnect the ignition coil wiring harness and insert the air intake hose. Grab the hose clamps from earlier and tighten them ensuring nothing is loose.
- Reconnect the ignition coil wiring harness
- Insert the air intake hose
- Secure the air intake hose with its clamps
